Site Description

Coastline; Forest

Danjogunto islands are located on the East China Sea about 70 km south-southwest of Fukuejima island of Gotoretto in western Kyushu, and the islands are uninhabited, consisting of five islands from the north, Oshima (about 2.7 km2), Kurokijima(0.1 km2), Nakanoshima(0.3 km2), Hanagurijima(0.2 km2) and Meshima(1.3 km2) and a lot of small reefs.

The highest point lies in Meshima(283m above sea level), which has precipices along the coastline and well-developed columnar joints. As for vegetation, herbal communities, and ever-green broadleaf forests (height of trees :3-10m)including Machilus tunbergii and Euonymus japonica range widely. Wild birds living there include Brown Boobies, Izu Islands Thrushes and Ryukyu Robins, as well as Streaked Shearwaters nesting in high densities. Besides, the records concerning spring migratory birds imply that these islands are important stopovers for migratory birds.
