Rishiri island is located in the Japan Sea in the north of Hokkaido. In the center of the island is Mt. Rishiri (1,721m), which makes the island a round mountain that has a circumference of 60 km at the base. The island is 182 km^2, and the biggest island in Hokkaido, except for the Northern Territories. This island includes various kinds of natural areas such as a high mountain, coastlines, grasslands, lakes and wetlands, and forests. The area has endemic floral species, and endemic sub species of insects.
