Site Description

Forest

The site is located 300 km southwest of the main island of Okinawahonto, and belongs to Miyakoretto archipelago in the west of Nanseishoto island chain, forming a part of Sakishima island chain. Miyakojima, Ikemajima, Ohgamijima, Irabujima, Shimojishima, Kurimajima, Minnajima and Taramajima are collectively called Miyakogunto islands. Miyakojima has been formed by the elevation of coral bed, composed of Ryukyu limestone. The landform is flat with no high mountains, and the highest point is at 113 m. Forest vegetation is mainly composed of planted Pinus luchuensis, with such evergreen broadleaf trees as Machilus tunbergiiI.
