Japan / Kanto Region /
JP074Inner Tokyo bay
Site Description
Wetlands
Since Tokyo Bay had sandy shallows for a good distance from the shore, its reclamation has been carried out. The reclaimed ground was once utilized for factories, but then they have been replaced by office buildings and high rise residences as a result of redevelopment.
A campaign to conserve the few natural tidal flats including Sanbanse has been set up. The tidal flats are in the inner Tokyo Bay and include the Tamagawa river estuary, Sanmaisu(Tokyo), Sanbanse(Chiba), Shiohama(Chiba) and Yatsu-kigata(Chiba).
