Site Description

Forest

The site is located in the south of Hokkaido, from Karikachi pass to Erimo cape, extending about 140 km. The highest peak is Mt.Hidaka Boroshiridake at 2,052 m. The lower zone (under 500 m) is covered with broadleaf tree forests such as Quercus crispula, Acer mono and Cercidphyllum japonicum. Upper zone is mixed with Picea jezoensis, Abies sachalinensis and broadleaf trees. Further up is a belt of Betula emanii ( at about 1,200-1,300 m high), and at the mountain top is a colony of Pinus pimila and alpine flaura (1,400-1,600 m).
